Celebrating 17+ years and reaching 500,000+ youth across Canada, Unity is a national non-profit organization that uses Hip Hop art forms to promote resilience and well-being among under-resourced communities and youth through free programs and events. To us, Hip Hop is more than a collection of art forms – it is a vehicle of advocacy and solidarity that empowers the next generation to discover their voice and power. We have a majority representation (75%+) of BIPOC individuals (board/staff/artists) who represent the diverse communities we serve, and we work year-round in Ontario, Nova Scotia and Manitoba.

About the Opportunity

Unity is recruiting 2 - 3 new volunteers to its Finance Committee! In particular we are seeking individuals with experience in–

  • Budgeting and Reporting (cash flow forecasting)
  • Non-Profit Finance (e.g. Restricted and Unrestricted Funding)
  • Canadian Charitable Responsibility & Filings
  • Diversifying Revenue Streams

About the Recruitment Process

Candidates will participate in two informal interviews before being invited to join the committee, and one orientation session before their first committee meeting. New members will be invited to the committee for a term of at least 2 years. 

About the Committee

The committee will advise and support the Unity Leadership Team (Board & Unity Leadership Staff) in ensuring Unity’s financial records/reports are accurate and complete; will work with leadership staff to develop, and then approve and monitor, Unity’s annual budget and spending plan via quarterly reporting; will ensure that Unity is complying with financial compliance requirements; and will advise on the development and execution strategic financial plans. The Committee is steered jointly by Unity’s Treasurer, the Executive Director, and the Controller. There are currently 6 members sitting on the committee, in addition to two staff. 

Committee Objectives

  • Suggest industry best practices & provide feedback for internal financial processes
  • Quarterly review of organizational financial reports
  • Annual approval of: some text
    • Final Audited Statements (past FY)
    • Organizational Budget (following FY)
  • Support the development & creation of financial tools/reports based on the needs of the organization
  • Explore financially responsible investment opportunities
  • For Finance Committee Chair ONLY: Monthly review & approval of organizational bank statements (Account Statement, Credit Card Statements, Trial balance, Bank Recs)

Committee Meetings

  • The Committee will meet 8 times annually  to review organizational financial reports & to support the advancement of Committee Objectives (as stated above)
  • Meetings will be 1- 1.5 hours in length and will be held at a time that best fits the needs of the committee
  • Meeting materials & a meeting agenda will be provided by the Committee Chair to the Committee Members no less than 72 hours (3 days) to the meetingsome text
    • It is the expectation that all Committee members will have read them prior to the meeting
  • Of course, there will be other business items that will need to be addressed from time to time during meetings
  • Additional meetings may be held at the discretion of the Chairperson.

Committee Member Role Expectations

  • Committee members will attend committee meetings having read the provided materials, and ready to positively contribute to active discussion and supportive inquiry. 
  • Committee members will maintain a current knowledge of Unity programming and activities, to be facilitated by the Committee Chair, Controller and Executive Director. 
  • In person attendance is expected for 75% of all meetings (6 of 8 annual meetings).
  • Where necessary & agreed to, select committee members will meet Unity Leadership Staff – outside committee meetings – to support the advancement of committee objectives (as stated above).
  • The ability to make a personal donation to Unity is always appreciated, but not a requirement for committee members. 
  • For meetings where financial reports are being analyzed for a board meeting, quorum must be met (50% or 50% +1 of the committee). 

Committee Priorities for 2023-2024

  • Committee Recruitment:  Onboarding new members to the finance committee, to reach target committee size of 6 - 8 individuals
  • Create a committee calendar to guide annual schedule of work together
  • Work with Unity leadership to design a strategic financial plan (to accompany Unity’s overall strategic plan) 
  • Updating Unity’s Risk mitigation tool – finance section, compliance sections
  • Coordinate a committee learning session in a relevant topic 
  • Explore opportunities / methods for reducing expenses and increasing revenue
